Hunger is closer to home than you might imagine. Did you know that here in Oak Park and River Forest, over 7,600 people don’t know where their next meal is coming from? Jason and Katie are among them. Jason stood up in our last volunteer orientation to tell us all something: he has a Master’s degree in community development; his wife, Katie, has a Master’s degree as well. They and their three children were here to volunteer as a way to give back to the Pantry. Because they are also clients. Productive workers all their lives, Jason and Katie now find themselves out of work, out of unemployment compensation, and out of savings. What they do have is plenty of compassion and dignity. So Jason stood up to tell us he’s proud to be a Pantry volunteer.

We’re proud to be able to help Jason and Katie. We’re proud the Pantry is in a community that enables us to provide nutritious food to over 40,000 people so far this year. Working with our hunger relief partners, the Food Pantry can purchase food at a dramatic discount. A typical food allotment (pictured) costs $83.69 at a retail grocery store. But the Pantry was able to provide this food to our clients for just $8.55.
